Learn to listen to your true self
Whether you call it intuition, body intelligence, inner knowing or the felt sense, our bodies are the key to change. When you learn to slow down and listen to your body wisdom with self-compassion, healing and creativity naturally emerge. With enough safety, we intuitively transform into who we are meant to be.
The power of Focusing—a practice and process.
Intuitive knowing is a natural human ability.
We can all do it. Unfortunately, many of us had to unlearn this knowing. It wasn’t safe to be our authentic selves when we were young. And so we adopted protective parts that formed our personality. But you can probably feel that this isn’t working for you anymore. Your stress levels may be increasing, or you’re becoming aware of the trauma that wants to be healed. There’s a desire to be more resilient. Moreover, our world needs your authentic self to be present. Using the magic of the body—via a simple process and practice created by Eugene Gendlin called Focusing—your true self can shine. We can heal the past and make space to step into our more creative and courageous selves. Transforming ourselves changes the world.
Try a Focusing exercise now:
In the following video, I walk you through a Focusing experience: to access and hear from a felt sense. We begin with a body scan, to become centered and grounded in the body; a preperatory step for Focusing. Then I lead you through a Focusing experience.
What is Focusing? An overview of the 6 steps
Philosopher Eugene Gendlin discovered Focusing practice in the 1950s and 1960s working with Carl Rogers at the University of Chicago. This beautiful evidence-based practice of Focusing has six steps that can be learned to access our body-felt knowing. In the following video I give an overview of these six steps that Gendlin created to point people to Focusing, our natural ability to listen to our inner knowing.
Hi, I’m Annette
I’m passionate about helping people return to their bodies. As a Focusing teacher, I can show you how to listen in a compassionate way to your inner wisdom that is wanting to come forward.
I grew up spending much time in nature and I am committed to embodiment work as I know it plays an essential role in healing: individually, collectively and for the planet as a whole.
By working together, I can show you how to make a safe space to welcome your authentic self, moving you from stress to resilience. To be who you are meant to be. So that we can co-create the better world we want and deserve.
Learn Focusing
The Focusing process can be done alone—and most people find that they prefer to practice with a listening partner. The co-regulation of a listener allows us to go deeper, have more felt shifts and ultimately make bigger change. Therefore my beginner courses here are group classes to learn Focusing in partnership, including having a partner to practice with weekly. I also offer a 101 Workshop to get a taste of Focusing.
Interested in embodiment work for Teams?
I also work with teams, using Focusing and other embodied creativity tools like Social Presencing Theatre, Dynamic Facilitation and Open Space Technology. View my team facilitation services page to learn more about bringing embodied pauses to your meetings and workplace.
Join us this January for our first PUPA Retreat: Focusing and Movement. Over the course of one weekend, PUPA Trainees and Trainers, who have been exploring parallel movement and embodiment practices for years, will share how these practices can be crossed with Focusing to help deepen our processes.
Our connection to our body and our ability to listen to it is fundamental to Focusing. Learning to listen while in movement, or to learn from our movement can add a new dimension to our felt experiences.
Movement can be a great way to settle the body, to bring a sense of calm and groundedness, and to prepare us for traditional still Focusing.
For some people, noticing and describing physical sensations can be a great challenge. Knowing that challenge and witnessing it on a regular basis, we created this retreat to share and explore new ways to get in touch with our body.
When we allow ourselves to move, whether in a very free or a very organized way, whether slowly or rapidly, whether outwardly with our limbs or deep within our belly, we are creating new sensations. We are sending and receiving new information. And it can become much easier to feel and to describe these sensations than those of a still body.
Movement is also a way for great wisdom to come forward. By inviting more intuitive movement, we can break out of our regular ways of being and thinking, deepen our experiencing, and discover new insights. We make our felt meaning visible by inviting movement, and this can further explicate a felt knowing.
Finally, some workshops will dive into moving as social groups, and noticing our responses to these interactions with Focusing.
Our hope with this new offering is that you might find new tools, new pathways, and new perspectives to inspire and support your Focusing journey.
